Despite leading the NBA in assists, the new point guard of the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James, made his most memorable play of the season Wednesday night against the Utah Jazz.
Early in the first quarter off a rebound, LeBron dribbled the ball slowly past midcourt and had an unprecedentedly bizarre brain lapse and literally took three straight steps while cradling the bottom of the ball underhanded like he was about to bowl it down a lane.
Jazz defender Bogdan Bogdanovic instantly threw up his arms at the referee in utter disbelief what James had just done, as the official at mid-court astonishly didn’t blow his whistle as the play went on.
LeBron joked it about after the game:
"I feel bad for the refs on that one because they'll probably get a write-up on that or something. That was pretty bad."
Despite playing in over 1,400 games for his career including postseason, Lebron quipped that it was the worst play of his career.
“It was the worst thing, probably one of the worst things I've ever done in my career. I didn't realize I did it until halftime. One of my coaches showed me."
And why he did it? Well, of course the league's most methodical tactician tried to come up with a legitimate excuse...
"I think at the same time, I was watching the underneath play, and KCP and Donovan got into it. KCP started to run, and Donovan bumped into him, he fell on the ground. I think I was ready to pass the ball, and my brain just kind of just, I had a malfunction. I really had a malfunction."
James’ comical travel reminded us all of some of the other infamous travel calls in NBA history.
