Colin Cowherd: âIâve said this for 25 years of doing this⌠quarterback is different. You gotta be an adult because youâre the face of the franchise. Turn your hat around at the podium every Wednesday, be a grownup, youâre not a fanboy. Itâs okay for you fanboys to wear your hat backwards, youâll never be in charge of a $2 billion franchise.  A story came out today that the Panthers wanted Baker Mayfield but were not willing to pay more than $5 million for him. Thatâs what Jacoby Brissett makes, and Baker is way more talented than Jacoby Brissett. Every 3 or 4 years a quarterback comes out of college with an ego and I say âehhh, heâs not going to workâ. Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, Jameis Winston, Cam Newton, theyâre just not mature enough. Theyâre talented, but at some point in their career itâs not going to work, and theyâre not going to get a second chance after their initial team passes, because nobody wants a polarizing or celebrity quarterback. Baker has almost no market⌠$5 million is what the Panthers would spend. Kansas City spent about $50 million on Mahomes, and Iâll argue all day that Baker is talented. I donât think heâs no. 1 pick talented, but heâs one of the 25 best quarterbacks in this league and yet there is no market for him. Teams are not looking for polarizing, snarky, ego guys at quarterback. Aaron Rodgers is that, but Aaron is a once-in-a-generation talent and even Green Bay admits now that they donât have a three-year contract, they offer three one-year contracts. They would bail on him TODAY if Jordan Love could play. Five million dollars, are you kidding me?? Heâs a $25 million quarterback⌠he got them into a playoff game and beat Pittsburgh. That should qualify you for $25-$30 million a year. The ONLY reason heâs not being paid is because of the snark and the nonsense. It DOES matter. They want the Mac Jones and Tre Lance press conference, and youâre not selling out as an athlete if youâre doing that. Sometimes you just have to fall on the sword for the team. This position requires an ADULT.â (Full Video Above)
Listen to Colin Cowherd explain why there has effectively been zero market around the league for disillusioned Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, despite Mayfield having already put together a very respectable 4-year resume in the pros.
Check out the video above as Colin details why a potential $30 million a year quarterback is now suddenly only being offered just $5 million.
