Lions Maul Suspected Poacher To Death In South Africa

Authorities say they found the remains of a suspected poacher near Kruger National Park in South Africa. The poacher was mauled to death by a pack of lions according to AFP

Local officials are working to identify the man, but that has been difficult because the lions did not leave much behind.

"It seems the victim was poaching in the game park when he was attacked and killed by lions. They ate his body, nearly all of it, and just left his head and some remains," Limpopo police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe told AFP.

Police said they found a loaded hunting rifle near the body, which was found on the property of a private game park. The area has seen an increase in illegal poaching over the past few years.

Some people believe that lion parts have medicinal properties and are used in some forms of traditional medicine.

Poachers in South Africa also illegally hunt rhinoceroses because of a large demand for their horns in China and Vietnam, where many people believe the horns have medicinal uses.
